Adaptive Weighted Averaging for Real-time MR Imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) still suffers from a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), especially for real-time imaging sequences. In order to increase the SNR of a sequence of images, an adapted weighted averaging (AWA) approach is proposed and applied to coronary angiography imaging. It can in principle be used for any sequence of 2D images, e.g. fMRI or 3D data sets as well as in CT for fluoroscopy imaging. It can be executed in real-time or applied as a post-processing step. In this work, a temporal filter is presented that significantly enhances the SNR of real-time spiral or radial MR images, while introducing only minimal blurring. The filter algorithm was implemented on a digital signal processor (DSP) for real-time execution.
